Located in Kailua, Sand People is among the best of Hawaii retailers when it comes to supporting local artisans like Lane Tanner Designs. We sat down and spoke to the store manager Kim about why she loves Kailua, Sand People, and her favorite local eateries. Here’s what she had to say.
What do you love about the neighborhood of Kailua?
Kailua retains its beachy small town feel with locally-owned shops and eateries.
We love the half mile of white sand beaches, blue ocean water, and gentle breezes, as well as the local fare. You can see small islands from the shore including the Mokulua Islands to the east and Kalama Beach to the west. The mild waves make for a great place for new surfers and others who love exploring the ocean.
What are your favorite local restaurants?
We love Paniolo's and Lemongrass Vietnamese/Thai because of the flavors and locally-sourced fresh ingredients.
Paniolo is the Hawaiian word for cowboy. While the cowboys of the wild west like Wyatt Earp and Billy the Kid roamed the mainland, paniolos date back to the 1700s when King Kamehameha ruled the islands. Still thriving today, paniolos are dedicated to preserving the Hawaiian culture and ranching experience. Paniolo’s the restaurant is dedicated to serving grass-fed beef from local ranchers along with other local meats and healthy, pesticide-free, fresh-from-the-garden ingredients.
Lemongrass stays true to their roots, serving the tastiest Vietnamese and Thai food. More than one Yelp reviewer has said that Lemongrass serves the best curry they’ve ever tasted. That makes my mouth water!
If the name Kailua sounds familiar, it may be because President Obama visited the Island Snow and treated the First Family to shaved ice! Mmmmm….delicious!
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Helping our customers find that perfect gift, outfit, or piece of jewelry is the best reward.
We love how Sand People brings the community together in support of local artisans and provides quality goods to our visitors.
One last question…What is your favorite Lane Tanner Designs piece?
Lane Tanner Jewelry is light and airy and I think people - local or tourist - love wearing a piece of Hawaii. Our "customer pick" is the Mokolua Islands teardrop earrings which can be worn every day, on a special occasion, or even as you’re exploring the island!
If you’re looking for a gift or keepsake, visit Sand People while you’re in Kailua!
I love the rainbow necklace for my BFF from Kaua’i! It will remind her if her son and his presence in her life even though he’s gone ❤️ Love the beach in the background to add to the sentiments! Great quality!
