Open back jewelry is what most people picture when they think of Foterra. The photo is set inside a sterling silver or gold filled frame, with the back open so light can pass through. The result is luminous, almost like a tiny stained glass window on your wrist or around your neck.
Because light plays such a big role in how the photo reads, this style is at its best with images that have:
Open back jewelry is translucent, which means faces tend to look muddy and washed out. If the whole point of your photo is someone's face, this is not the right style. But people captured in silhouette against a beautiful scene? Now that looks stunning!
Bezel jewelry is our newer custom style, and it's quickly become one of our most popular. The photo is printed and set inside a raised sterling silver rim that surrounds and protects it. The backing is solid rather than open, which changes everything about how the photo looks.
Without light passing through, the image reads more like a photograph. This makes it perfect for photos where you need to see the details.
Bezel is the right choice when your photo has:

Because bezel pieces have a solid back, the photo tips that apply to open back (bold colors, high contrast, silhouettes) are less critical here. That said, a well-lit photo with good resolution will always give you a better result than a dark or blurry one.
